The primary grade program was developed to attempt to provide every child with the foundation for the understanding of the printed word. Students are guided to express ideas and feelings in writing and in person, and encouraged to develop a basic quantitative sense with an ability to use numbers easily and accurately.
Reading begins with letter recognition of sights and sounds, moves to blends and then to decoding words and sentences culminating in chapter books. Guided Reading which fosters multi-level, small group instruction is one of the strategies utilized in our reading program.
Our students benefit from a research based program in grades pre-k through second. Please click on the Rowland Reading Foundation to enjoy learning more about our wonderful reading program.
Writing across the Curriculum is introduced in Kindergarten and by grade two, students are able to express ideas in complete sentences and write a one page persuasive piece. Science and Social Studies are often hands-on units with project based final products made by students individually or in groups.
The math program is a one who incorporates games and mental math, cultivates problem-solving skills and encourages alternative ways of thinking beginning in the primary grades.
